Video – Don Giovanni

Recorded live at the Conservatorio di Musica Santa Cecilia in Rome on Saturday, 12 October 2024, this performance marked the official launch of Opera Out of Opera 2 (OOO2), a Creative Europe cooperation project dedicated to making opera more accessible and relevant to younger audiences. The opening event introduced a fresh artistic vision that bridges tradition and contemporary culture.

Set in the newly reopened and meticulously restored Sala Accademica, the production offered a daring reinterpretation of Mozart’s Don Giovanni, placing the infamous seducer in a modern landscape shaped by digital identity, social media influence, and the performative pressures of online life. This conceptual framework invited audiences to reflect on power, manipulation, and self-destruction in today’s hyperconnected world.

Don Giovanni, composed by W. A. Mozart with a libretto by Lorenzo Da Ponte, is a dramatic tour de force that fuses comedy, tragedy, and the supernatural. Based on the legend of Don Juan, the opera follows the downfall of a man who defies moral and social boundaries, seducing and deceiving without remorse until he is confronted with the consequences of his actions. The opera’s layered narrative and psychological complexity continue to resonate across cultures and generations.

Mozart’s score—by turns electrifying, sensual, and ominous—captures the full emotional spectrum of the story, from the soaring intensity of Donna Anna’s grief to the comic frustration of Leporello’s complaints. The final scene, in which Don Giovanni meets his supernatural fate, remains one of the most powerful conclusions in all of opera. This OOO2 production breathed new life into the work, reminding us that the themes of temptation, accountability, and truth remain as urgent as ever.
